Washington – Donald Trump is the first president without a companion animal in 130 years. The last was Andrew Johnson—who was impeached.
“Grab a Puppy—Before It’s Too Late.”
So proclaims PETA’s new ad campaign, which is breaking next week in DC newspapers in time for National ‘Adopt a Shelter Pet’ Day on April 30. Citing this key unfilled spot by the White House fireplace, PETA hopes that President Trump will be inspired to adopt one of the 2,100 dogs currently waiting in animal shelters in the National Capital area—and that other Americans will adopt some of the millions more in shelters across the nation, who long for a guardian to throw them a stick or take them out for a walk.
“Dogs don’t care if you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or neither—they just want a good home,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “And the White House could be as good a home as any.”
Dogs’ calming effect also appears to help people handle stress, according to this Harvard study, among others. Dog guardians tend to have lower blood pressure and get more exercise than those without canine companions, and the animals’ affection reduces anxiety in humans—a widespread condition that crosses all party lines.
The campaign was created for PETA by The Community, which has been recognized in Ad Age‘s “Agency A-List” six times in the last seven years.
