Los Angeles – Fresh off her turn in the Oscar-winning Lady Bird and a Tony nomination for her Broadway performance in Three Tall Women, Laurie Metcalf dances with adopted pup Bucky in a new PETA ad that proclaims, “Adopt Your Biggest Fan.”
The actor also sat down with PETA for an exclusive video interview to discuss her love for animals, saying, “I’ve had many dogs growing up and in my adult life. … [S]o I can’t recommend enough going to a shelter and finding your long-lost family member.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that more than 6 million dogs and cats end up in U.S. animal shelters every year and half of them have to be euthanized because there aren’t enough good homes for them all.
“Please visit your shelter first before thinking about adopting an animal anywhere else, because you’re bound to run into the love of your life,” says Metcalf. “And you’re saving a life. And on top of that, it helps to diminish the amount of animals in these shelters.”
Metcalf is part of a growing list of celebrities—including her Broadway co-star Glenda Jackson, her The Big Bang Theory co-star Mayim Bialik, Taraji P. Henson, Gillian Anderson, Peter Dinklage, Charlize Theron, Joaquin Phoenix, Tom Hardy, and Eva Mendes—who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.
