McAllen, TexasWhat:    On Tuesday, a group of PETA Latino supporters will distribute vegan ice cream to children and families at the Humanitarian Respite Center (HRC), which offers food and beverages to immigrants who have been released from the McAllen detention center. PETA Latino has also sent a shipment of dairy-free milk to the HRC, which has expressed a need for soy milk.

When:    Tuesday, July 3, 10 a.m.

Where:    Humanitarian Respite Center, 1721 Beaumont Ave., McAllen

“Dairy-free milks and ice creams are a delicious option for anyone who is lactose intolerant, is vegan, or simply wants to practice kindness to mother cows and their calves,” says PETA Latino Senior Manager Alicia Aguayo. “PETA hopes to help the Humanitarian Respite Center give a bit of relief to families who have made an extremely difficult journey.”

PETA Latino—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—notes that soy milk is free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol and spares animals immense suffering. On today’s dairy farms, calves are stolen from their loving mothers shortly after birth so that their milk can be consumed by humans instead.
