The Avengers Are Going Vegan, and We Think That’s ‘Marvelous’
Written by | May 18, 2018
“There was an idea: to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if [they] could become something more.” Many of the remarkable Avenger superheroes are, indeed, becoming something more—they’re going vegan.
In films based on Marvel comics, the Avengers are known for taking on some of the most heinous threats and villains around. In real life, the actors who portray these badass heroes are taking on threats even more terrifying than Thanos himself—the meat and dairy industries. Find out how these real-life superheroes are embracing vegan lifestyles in the most marvelous ways.
Benedict Cumberbatch (aka ‘Doctor Strange’)
Just last month, while promoting the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, mega-talented British actor Benedict Cumberbatch mentioned—during three separate interviews—that he’s vegan.

Chadwick Boseman (aka ‘Black Panther’)
Let’s face it—Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman looks good. The 40-year-old (that’s right—40!) credits his vigorous exercise regimen and plant-based eating with giving him some of “the handsomest years” of his life—at least, that’s what he told MrPorter.com during an interview at a vegan café in Los Angeles. According to the fashion site, Boseman is still “mostly vegan” and loves nutritious juices like the Greena Colada from Sage Vegan Bistro.
Bruh, how is Chadwick Boseman 40? I need to look this vegan jive up. 🌱

Mark Ruffalo (aka ‘Hulk’)
When you look at Hulk, you might think, “Now there’s a guy who eats his veggies.” And you’d be right: Mark Ruffalo has long spoken out against the meat industry. For years, he’s endorsed Meatless Mondays, opposed “big ag,” and shed light on the connections between climate change and eating meat.
Beef production takes up a huge amount of your carbon footprint. We can take fewer bites of beef, why not cut down? https://t.co/UUWLnFf0Sk

Chris Hemsworth (aka ‘Thor’)
Swoon-worthy Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth may not be as vegan as Liam—his equally hunky actor brother—but Chris did train vegan to get in shape to play Thor. His personal trainer revealed that the actor went vegan while filming and that his favorite foods included beans and veggie burgers, according to Mail Online. Perhaps Liam could slip an extra vegan burger on the barbie at the next family get-together.

Danai Gurira (aka ‘Okoye’)
If you want to be more like Danai Gurira—and seriously, after seeing her portray Okoye in Black Panther, who wouldn’t?—try having some cashew cheese and coconut milk yogurt. When tweeting about World Vegan Day, she admitted that these two are some of her favorite vegan finds:

Scarlett Johansson (aka ‘Black Widow’)
A skintight black onesie is not an easy look to pull off, but Black Widow’s Scarlett Johansson managed to do so effortlessly. While circuit training and learning mixed martial arts, she also dined on plant-based meals. According to reports, the Avengers star ate salads, oatmeal, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
Peter Dinklage (aka ‘Eitri’)
Reason #1,000 to ❤️ Peter Dinklage.

Dave Bautista (aka ‘Drax’)
How does Dave Bautista get fit enough to take on a role like Drax the Destroyer? Eating “as clean as possible,” including using vegan protein powder. (His current favorite is Sunwarrior.) We love that the Drax actor is outspoken about cutting out meat—because if this guy can do it, so can you!

Winston Duke (aka ‘M’Baku’)
In Black Panther, M’Baku—played by the handsome Winston Duke—joked, “If you say one more word, I will feed you to my children. … Just kidding. We are vegetarians.” Although this one-liner spawned many spoofs, Duke told Variety, “[I]t’s kind of teaching kids that eating vegetables is cool, which I’m all for.” He even confessed that his dream amusement park includes a vegetarian café:
What kind of roles would @Avengers: Infinity War stars @AnthonyMackie, @Winston_Duke and Sebastian Stan want to play if they were part of a theme park ride? #AvengersInfinityWar pic.twitter.com/shArQRCSrv

“[W]e’re starting to move in the direction of becoming a vegetarian family,” the supermom also told the magazine.
In Infinity War, while discussing the villainous Thanos with Strange, Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) reveals that there’s a Ben & Jerry’s flavor named after him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “And I swore off dairy, but then Ben & Jerry’s named a flavor after me,” he said to Wong, Strange’s sidekick. Strange then admits that Stark’s namesake flavor is a “[b]it chalky.” Not to worry, Stark—Ben & Jerry’s has loads of delicious, dairy-free ice creams to choose from. Click here to discover them all!
