Columbus, TexasWhat:    On Saturday, when Sen. Ted Cruz arrives at Schobels Restaurant, he’ll be greeted by PETA supporters gathered outside, who will hand out samples of delicious barbecued tofu. Displaying signs that proclaim, “Tofu Is Made in Texas” and “Tofu in Every Pot,” the group’s giveaway comes in response to Cruz’s recent comment that liberals want Texas “to be just like California, right down to tofu.”

When:    Saturday, September 15, 6 p.m.

Where:    Schobels Restaurant, 2020 Milam St., Columbus

“Tofu is the most versatile food on the planet, and it’s grown right in the Lone Star State,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is confident that once Ted Cruz tastes how delicious tofu can be, he’ll want to see it in every Texas pot.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that vegan dishes such as tofu are free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol and that they spare animals daily suffering and a terrifying death in today’s meat, egg, and dairy industries. Eating tofu also supports Texas agriculture: Last year, the state’s soybean production was valued at nearly $61 million.
